Slopes / Re: Tanglwood Ski Area
« Last post by jont on October 05, 2016, 03:11PM »
I'm surprised to see the name Tanglwood here. I skied here as a kid into adulthood. It was a shame to lose this place. It was pretty cool up there. For those of you that never had a chance to ski Tanglwood, you missed out on a ski area that was never crowded during the week. The hilss were somewhat short, but it was still a great getaway.

They put a lot of money into montage Mountain in the last few years. The place looks great, they just need more snow and colder temps for great skiing. This place is a short drive from the Scranton and Wilkes Barre area.

This thread is dedicated to Shawnee Mountain skiing.

I skied at Shawnee last year at the end of the season. There was a decent crowd for the end of the year. Ski conditions weren't great because of the temps, but I still had a good time. This mountain gets crowded so I try to ski here on weeknights.

I heard them mention on the news that there is some kind of Octoberfest going on at Elk Mountain in the pre-season. Hopefully Elk will kick off their season right on schedule this year. They always seem to have great conditions even when the winter in NEPA isn't cooperating.

As for directions to Big Bear skiing... My GPS took me on a wild ride also. This ski area is not really near a major highway, so windy roads are the only roads.

I have skied up at Big Bear a couple of times in recent years. The biggest downfall to this ski area is the location. There is just no easy way to get there.

As for the skiing, it's not the biggest mountain in the Poconos, but there is enough mountain there to keep anyone busy for a whole day. The conditions were very good when I was there. There is a good mix of slopes for various levels of skiing.

Camelback is the premier skiing resort in the Poconos. I ski quite a few times locally every year. For anyone looking for tips... The secret to Camelback is simple, go on a weekday or weeknight and you will enjoy yourself more. This mountain gets very crowded on winter weekends.

Do some mid-week skiing at Camelback if you can.

Now the Alpine Mountain website says closed for the season, no mention of anything else.

Just looked at Alpine Mountain website and no mention of closing or anything like that. Hopefully they get back on their feet. Alpine is not the biggest mountain in the Poconos, it's more like a well kept skiing secret.

They have light crowds which is what probably led to their money problems. I have skied here quite a few times in my life. There's a good mix of hills and you'll get plenty of runs per night at a place like this.

Hopefully someone can post some kind of update before the ski season gets going.

Info on Pocono Traffic please...

In general how is Pocono traffic in the afternoon. I am looking at a possible job in the Poconos and I'm wondering how congested things get around the area. I will have to take interstate 80 to return home about 4:30 PM daily.

This depends where you are in the Poconos. Interstate 380 is an easy road to drive. Interstate 80 has its moments of congestion, but this varies depending on where you are in the region.
Area News / Re: Trump Rally in Wilkes-Barre

Trump brings controversy to every venue he visits. That's what is driving his campaign. I would actually like to attend a Trump rally just to see the crowd there. Is Trump or Pence coming to Scranton or Wilkes-Barre before the election again?

2016 snowstorms were not very memorable. Maybe we'll see some action this winter. What does the farmer's almanac say about the upcoming winter in the northeast? Anyone read it or trust it?
